On Tuesday, April 20, 2021, the United States of America issued a travel advisory, warning its citizens against travelling to Nigeria over the worsening security situation in the country.

With the unending cases of violent attacks and other forms of lives guzzling insecurity in many parts of the country, Nigeria is literally becoming a killing field as the day goes by.

In the first six weeks that ushered in 2021, data obtained from the Nigeria Security Tracker, NST showed that no fewer than 1, 525 persons were killed in different parts of the country.

Last week, Nigeria recorded over 200 deaths in separate violent incidents across the country, mostly by armed non-state actors.

Section 14 (2b) of the 1999 Nigerian Constitution as amended, states that the welfare and security of the citizens shall be the primary purpose of the government. Therefore the government’s sole responsibility owes its citizen a constitutional duty to protect their lives and properties.

Unfortunately, this is not the case in Nigeria, the government led by President Muhammadu Buhari continues to relegate on a primary responsibility by allowing the avoidable waste of human lives.
