Covid-19 Vaccine Donations To Nigeria: The Story So Far In Infographics

It is safe to say that Nigeria and other countries in Africa continue to enjoy vaccine donations from the global north as the world continues the battle against the covid-19 pandemic.

According to the Nigerian Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA), the agency in charge of the vaccine roll-out, Nigeria first received 3.92 million out of the expected 14 million doses of Oxford/AstraZeneca Covid vaccine through COVAX on March 2nd 2021; kickstarting vaccine donations that have now risen to over 10 million doses in less than 12 months.

In this article, we would review some of the information we have on vaccine donations and promised purchases by the Nigerian government. Please note that this review is by no means exhaustive.

A Breakdown Of Vaccines Received

After the first COVAX Donation of 3.92 million doses of AstraZeneca vaccine was received in March 2021, Nigeria received another shipment of 470,000 doses of covid-19 vaccine from China.

In August, the American government shipped 4 million doses of Moderna’s (MRNA.O) COVID-19 vaccines to Nigeria. A total of 3.2 million Covid Vaccines have been donated by the US government between August 2021 and January 2022.

In September 2021, the UK government acknowledged its donation of 1.2 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines to Nigeria through the COVAX initiative.

In October 2021, France donated 501,600 doses of Astrazeneca vaccines to Nigeria under the UN COVAX scheme, followed by 500,000 doses of Janssen vaccines, donated by Ireland in November 2021.

In November, Germany began the rollout of 5,164,643 doses of the Johnson & Johnson Covid-19 vaccine to Nigeria, starting with the initial donation of 2,240,243 doses.

Nigeria received 2 million doses of Johnson & Johnson’s (JNJ.N) COVID-19 vaccine in February 2022 from Finland, Greece and Slovenia through the European Union. More donations from the EU is also expected to arrive in the coming weeks, according to Nigerian government officials said.

Procured Covid-19 Vaccines

Back in January 2021, the Nigerian government wrote to the African Union to request 10 million COVID-19 vaccine doses to supplement the COVAX programme. In August of the same year, the Federal Government took delivery of 177,600 Johnson &Johnson vaccines in Abuja, marking the first wave of arrivals of COVID-19 vaccines procured through the African Union.⁣

According to the Executive Director, NPHCDA, Dr Faisal Shuaib, the Nigerian government has spent a total of $298 million on procurement of some 29 million doses of the Johnson and Johnson jab through the AFREXIMbank.⁣

Vaccination Statistics In Nigeria

As of January 25, 2022, a total of 14,093,873 eligible persons have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while 5,252,406 eligible Nigerians have been fully vaccinated in Nigeria.
