Covid-19 Update: UK Daily Cases Surpass 200,000

The UK government has logged in its highest daily total since the pandemic began at 218,724. With this, the coronavirus tally of the UK has now reached 13,641,520.

The government also confirmed an additional 48 coronavirus-related fatalities. According to the official release, the total number of deaths due to the disease in Britain has now reached 148,941, with 14,126 COVID-19 patients remaining in the hospital.

However, despite the rising number, Prime Minister Boris Johnson has expressed his optimism that England would be able to “ride out” the existing COVID-19 wave without more limitations.

As reported by BBC, the Prime Minister hinted at new covid-19 restrictions to be implemented to curb the skyrocketing spread. Johnson added that up to 100,000 vital workers will be subjected to daily examinations, to prevent the virus from spreading to coworkers, as part of his “Plan B” programme for infection control.

Meanwhile, new reports by the World Health Organization shared that new evidence shows that the Omicron coronavirus variant causes milder symptoms than previously thought.

Nearly 300 million people have tested positive for COVID-19 worldwide in two years, and more than five million deaths have been reported.
